  In our latest LGBT+ Network Member article, third-year pharmacy student Scott Rutherford highlights the role we all play in educating ourselves and the people around us on inclusively to ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome whether that be in schools, colleges, university, or in the workplace. Scott also discusses the benefits of the Just Like Us charity that works to empower the young LGBT+ community.  

• Being ‘out’ as part of the LGBT+ community at work

  Research carried out by Stonewall in 2018 discovered that when at work, becoming 'out' and open about your sexuality if you are part of the LGBT+ community was still a problem. Over 35% of LGBT+ workers admitted hiding their identity at work due to fear of discrimination, with this rising to 42% for LGBT+ BAME colleagues and 51% for transgender staff.

  The PDA LGBT+ Pharmacists' Network has grown substantially over the last year and in the coming weeks, the PDA will be running an election for LGBT+ Officers to lead the network.  

• BAME Network Committee champions equality and diversity at recent Covid-19 vaccine event

  Last week, the PDA's newly elected BAME Committee held their first network event which explored Covid-19 vaccines, practice, myths and overcoming vaccine hesitancy.  

• Autism Awareness Week (29 March – 4 April)

  To mark Autism Awareness Week 2021, the PDA is calling on employers to raise awareness, engage and understand autism and encourage their employees to learn more so that positive changes can be achieved in workplaces. The PDA is also encouraging members to reflect on what they can do to raise awareness of autism. 

• NAWP ‘Women Leading in Pharmacy’ event hailed a great success

  On Saturday 13 March, NAWP hosted an online event to mark International Women’s Day. The UN theme for 2021 was Women in Leadership: achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world, so the event focused on Women Leading in Pharmacy. 

• NAWP produces factsheet to mark Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

  Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month takes place in the UK every March and is an opportunity to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. 

• NAWP welcomes ‘Ask for ANI’ scheme at LloydsPharmacy

  Earlier this year, the government launched the Ask for ANI (Action Needed Immediately) scheme in order to address the surge in domestic violence levels during the Covid-19 pandemic.
